Broadhurst & Sons

About Broadhurst & Sons

Union Bridge measures its year against the fields — corn going in, hay coming off, then the flat cold blowing across open Carroll County ground with nothing between it and the town but a fence line. Broadhurst & Sons works both ends of that year. Warm months mean mowing, the long farm-lane properties and the tighter lots along Main Street cut to an even height, edges drawn clean where grass meets stone and blacktop, and leaves hauled off once the sycamores along Little Pipe Creek let go. Cold months mean plowing: the long driveways opened, the walks shoveled, salt down on the slick spots before anybody has to guess at them. There is a particular pride in a lane that's been cleared and widened out to the mailbox by the time the school bus comes past. Same ground, same hands, whatever the calendar says.
