Across the West River the lights of Galesville lie low on the water, and in August the breeze off the creek is the only cool thing for miles. Jon's Lawns of Annapolis mows through that heat and keeps going when the year swings the other way, trading blades for plows after the first hard freeze rides down the Chesapeake. Summer here is rhythm — cut, trim, edge, blow the walks clean, week after week, the same route in the same order. Winter is timing — driveways and walkways opened and treated ahead of the morning, before anyone has reached for a coat. The river between the two seasons hardly changes, and neither does the way the work gets finished.
