The Grass Canvas

About The Grass Canvas

Along Saint Leonard's bay shore, the cliffs keep deep time in their layered faces, and after a storm the sand below can turn up a fossil shark tooth or two. The Grass Canvas works on something more recent and more personal: the lawn, treated as a blank green field to be brought into composition. In May, with honeysuckle in the hedgerows and the light off the water clear and bright, lawn care becomes almost painterly, even strokes of the mower and clean edges framing the beds, with no ragged corners left. The result reads well from the porch and better still from the road. Nature here has been layering its art for ages; The Grass Canvas simply adds the freshest coat.
