Southern Lancaster County goes quiet under snow: Colerain's ridge roads, the crossings over the Octoraro, farm lanes that run half a mile before they reach a barn. Fairway Landscape keeps them passable, plowing drives and lots and pushing the banks back far enough that the next storm has somewhere to go. The wind out here has open fields to work with, so drifts rebuild after the sky clears, and a second pass is part of the job rather than an extra. The walk from the door to the drive is shoveled and treated, then checked again once the wind has had its say. It is dark work with a plain reward: headlights on clean blacktop at five in the morning.
