Winter is the long season in Garrett County: the clouds come over Backbone Mountain and lay down snow by the foot, week after week, from November into April. Preferred Lawn runs plow and spreader through all of it around Oakland — driveways, lane-length approaches, walks and steps, and the ice that follows a thaw. Then the drifts go, the ground softens, and the same trucks trade blades for mowers, cutting and trimming lawns through the short mountain summer. Being out at four in the morning with the snow still falling is not romantic, but a cleared lane at daybreak absolutely is. Both halves of the year are the same promise: a property you can get into and out of, and one that looks looked-after.
