Burgundy Farm

About Burgundy Farm

West of town the land opens into long fields, and in winter the cornstubble holds the snow in pale rows until the wind decides otherwise. Burgundy Farm turns out into that weather to plow and clear the drives and lanes of Mount Airy, working the hours when everyone else is still under blankets. Storms find this high ground first and leave it last, so the job is often measured in passes rather than in one clean sweep. Salt goes down where ice likes to gather — the shaded bend, the foot of a sloped drive, the step at the back door. Morning comes, the road is black, the pavement is bare, and the day can start on time.
