When a winter storm finds its way down to McDaniel, it comes hard across Eastern Bay, and the low, open ground of the Bay Hundred gives the wind nothing to stop it. Snow is an occasional guest on this part of the Eastern Shore, so when it does come it can catch lanes and driveways along Route 33 off guard. Peake Contracting, LLC, a contracting business, takes on snow removal here, keeping drives and footpaths open so people can reach the main road up the peninsula. There is a stark beauty to marsh grass bowed under white with steel-gray water beyond it, and something steadying about keeping a path clear through all of it. When the storm moves off, the shoreline goes still and the way out is ready.
