Winter storms reach Laytonsville from the west, sliding down off the Piedmont rise and settling over the open farm fields of the agricultural reserve long before the crossroads at Routes 108 and 124 wakes up. Ruppert Landscape works those hours — the blue-black stretch between the last flake and the first commute — plowing lots, clearing drives, and cutting salt into the ice that forms where the wind crosses bare ground. There is a real satisfaction in a lot laid open corner to corner, the windrows stacked clean at the edges and the pavement dark again while the hedgerows are still white. Out here the roads run narrow between horse fences and the headwaters country of the Patuxent, so a walkway shoveled to its true width and a driveway opened to the mailbox matter more than they might in town. By the time the sun comes up over the ridgelines toward Damascus and Brookeville, the way out is already there, waiting. That is the whole of the work: snow moved, footing returned, morning made possible.
