Up toward Contee and the Konterra stretch, the tulip poplars go a hard bright yellow in the third week of October, and for about ten days the whole north end of Laurel looks lit from inside. Gold Tree LLC. moves through both halves of the year there: mowing, edging, trimming and mulching while things are growing, then plowing, shoveling and de-icing once the poplars are bare and the first storm comes down off the ridge. Snow around here often starts as rain and ends as ice, which means the salt matters as much as the blade. The results are plain to see either way — a lawn cut even, a driveway opened wide enough to turn a car around in. That is the trade, and it is a good one to be good at.
