Snow reaches the Lower Eastern Shore rarely and takes the whole peninsula by surprise when it does — wet, heavy stuff off the bay that turns to glass by morning. Critter Getters goes out in it, plowing driveways and lots around Fruitland, shoveling walks, spreading salt where a thin freeze has done more damage than six inches ever could. Down here the real adversary is ice: the overnight drizzle that stiffens on concrete before dawn, the shaded end of a lot the sun never finds. Clearing it means arriving early and getting ahead of the freeze rather than chasing it. By the time traffic picks up on Route 13, the pavement is dark and wet and safe, which is exactly how it ought to look.
