Snow reaches Spring Ridge from the west, over the Catoctin ridge, and by the time it crosses the Monocacy it has usually made up its mind to stay. Brooklyn&Bluevalley is out ahead of it — headlights swinging into the cul-de-sacs at four in the morning, the blade laying a clean white shoulder along the curb so a driveway stands open before the first alarm clock goes off. Walkways get taken down to the concrete, corner to corner, because half-cleared is exactly the part somebody slips on. Come April the same trucks trade steel for mowers, and the lawns along these streets are cut in even passes with an edge crisp enough to run a finger down. It is lawn care in the green months and snow removal in the white ones, for this town and the ones next to it, in whatever the Frederick County sky decides to send.
