Along the southern edge of town, where the land tips down toward Accokeek and the fields open out, you can watch a season change coming from a long way off. Maple Hill Lawn and Garden works both ends of that year in Fort Washington: mowing, edging and trimming through the green months, holding lawns to a weekly turn from the first March cut to the last one in November. When the weather flips, the same routes become snow work — driveways plowed, walkways and steps shoveled clear, salt down on the slopes before daybreak. Storms coming up the Potomac valley run wet and heavy, and a drive opened early is what lets a morning start on time. Then the thaw arrives, the grass greens up out of nowhere, and it all begins again.
