In April the woods around Gilpin's Falls come in slowly, red maple first, and North East Creek runs loud beneath the covered bridge's old plank floor. Melvin's Lawns & Landscapes opens its lawn care season about then, working Elkton and the towns west of it — first cuts, trimming along beds and fence lines, hauling off whatever winter left behind. Spring is uneven in this part of Maryland; a warm week starts everything growing and a cold one holds it exactly where it stood. Reading that is half the work, and the other half is simply mowing, on a schedule a lawn can count on. By the end of May a yard kept that way looks like it never had a winter at all.
