Elkridge wakes early because of what runs through it — Washington Boulevard, the freight lines, the truck lots stretching out toward Dorsey and the airport, all of it needing to move by six whether or not it snowed. Ruppert Landscape works that pre-dawn window, plowing commercial lots and access drives, opening loading areas and walkways, laying salt ahead of the freeze that follows a Maryland storm as surely as the storm itself. Ice is the real opponent here more often than depth; a two-inch night can leave a parking field harder to cross than a foot of powder. So the passes get made, and made again, until the asphalt is one clean dark sheet under the lot lights. Then the first cars swing in and nothing about the morning seems remarkable, which is the whole idea.
