Carney sits on the rolling piedmont northeast of Baltimore, where Harford Road climbs and dips through the neighborhoods and a February snow makes every one of those slopes a small adventure. Laneige Deneigement — the name is French for exactly what it does — treats that terrain with respect. Cold air sliding down from the Loch Raven side can glaze a shoveled walk back over in an hour, so clearing here is done thoroughly and salted properly the first time. Driveways angled at the street, sidewalks that run uphill both ways, the long aprons where the county plow leaves its ridge: all of it opened and kept open. There is a plain beauty in a Carney street after the work is done, white yards and black pavement in crisp alternation. That contrast is the signature of a job finished.
