Winter reaches Bethesda from the river side, sliding up the Potomac gorge and laying its first white on the sycamores above Little Falls. That is when Wray Brothers Landscapes goes to work — headlights on, plows down — so that by the time the neighborhood wakes, the driveways are black and dry and the walks hold a clean line of salt. When March loosens its grip and the tulip poplars leaf out over the side streets off Bradley Boulevard, the brothers trade blades for mowers, cutting fescue tight and edging it sharp against brick and flagstone. It is plain work in a town of old trees and steep little yards, and the result shows from the curb: pavement cleared before dawn, grass squared away by dusk. From Bethesda out toward Potomac and Chevy Chase, that is the shape of the work — the season handled, whichever one arrives.
