Morning arrives in Yarmouth Port off the marsh at Bass Hole, silver and salted, and the mowers are already out under the old oaks that lean across Route 6A. Scott's Landscaping works the Cape's particular grass — sandy ground, sea wind, a green that has to be coaxed rather than commanded — with mowing, trimming and edging that leave a clean line at every walk and bed. There is real pleasure in the last pass of the day: stripes laid straight, clippings swept up, a driveway edge crisp enough to set a ruler against. Spring cleanups pull winter's oak leaves and pine litter out of the beds; fall cleanups carry them off again before the first hard blow comes up the bay. It is steady, unglamorous work, and a well-kept yard on a Yarmouth side street is its own small argument for taking care of things.
