Storms come into Worcester from the west and take the high ground first, so the streets up around Green Hill Park and Burncoat carry an inch before downtown is even wet. DeJarnette and Sons starts up there and works down: plowing driveways, opening turnarounds wide enough to back out of, shoveling the walk from the door all the way to the curb. Salt and sand go on the steep drives, because in this city a driveway is usually a hill, and a hill holds ice long after the sun comes out. The work runs through the night and through the second and third pass, when the wind quietly refills what was already cleared. Then morning arrives and the whole street is passable, which is the entire point of it.
