A nor'easter reaches Winthrop Town before it reaches almost anywhere else — it comes in across open water, piles against Point Shirley, and fills the narrow streets with wet, heavy drifts. The Friendly Hammer goes out into it: plowing driveways, shoveling steps and side doors by hand where a truck simply cannot fit, cutting a path to the street and treating it so it stays walkable. On the clear morning after, with Deer Island white across the channel and Belle Isle Marsh frozen stiff, the finished driveways read like a row of dark rectangles down the block. Ice is the second half of the job, handled before it can set hard on a shaded walk. Snow work here is a neighborly errand run at four in the morning, and getting it right means somebody makes it to work on time.
