Out at the shed yard the cedar and pine stand in rows, and by December their pitched roofs are carrying the winter's first real load. Chapin Sheds spends the cold months on the other side of that weather — blades down, opening driveways and turnarounds across Whitman while the oaks along the back roads still hold their brown leaves. Storm work here is patient work: push, back up, push again, until a dooryard is actually wide enough to use. Walks and steps are cleared with a shovel, and the slick spots get sand before anyone has to think about them. Come morning the town looks the way it always does, only whiter, and every drive is open.
