Westwood in October has a smell to it — wet oak leaves, pine duff drifting out of the woods around Hale Reservation, woodsmoke starting early in the evening. Riverdale Tree Care spends the month on lawns that are vanishing under all of it: leaves collected and hauled off, turf given one final cut, beds cleared so nothing overwinters in a sodden pile. The rest of the year is the steady part — mowing through the summer heat, trimming around stone and post, spring cleanups to open everything back up. Grass that goes into winter clean comes out of it green, which is the whole argument for doing autumn properly. Westwood, Dover, Dedham, Norwood and Walpole.
