Route 2 runs right through this town, and when sleet starts at five in the morning everyone in Westminster suddenly has the same problem. Rivas Edge takes the first half of it — driveways plowed open, walks and steps shoveled and cleared, salt and sand where the glaze is setting up. Storms here often arrive as a mix, snow to rain to ice and back, which is harder work than a clean foot of powder. The aim is plain: a black driveway and a walkway with grip on it before anyone has to leave. Then the light comes up over the hills and the day goes on as though nothing had happened.
