Three in the morning, four inches down and still falling, and East Mountain is nothing but a darker shape behind the snow. Lamoureux Landworks LLC is out in it — plowing driveways, cutting a clean path to the door, laying down salt and sand where the ice wants to set up. Westfield storms have a way of stacking at the end of a driveway just as the town plow goes past, so the job is not finished until that ridge is gone too. Everyone else gets to wake up to it as scenery. The good part is the drive back at first light, past one cleared dooryard after another, with the whole city about to start moving.
