Downtown Westfield still wears its brick — the old whip shops along Elm, the sturdy fronts that have watched plenty of storms come down Route 20. At midnight in a heavy one, J.L. Raymaakers & Sons, Inc. is out under the streetlights with the blade down, opening lots and driveways and treating the corners that always ice first. Whip City weather arrives hard off the hills to the west and stays a while. There is pride in showing up in the worst hour of it so that the first hour of business can be perfectly ordinary. By the time lights come on in the shops, the pavement is black and wet and ready.
