By late winter the banks along Main Street in West Stockbridge have gone as hard as the old marble ledge, and every thaw glazes the driveways over again by suppertime. Williams Paving turns to snow when the calendar does: plowing, clearing walkways and aprons, spreading sand and salt on the ice that keeps re-forming in the shade near Shaker Mill Pond. A driveway pushed out to its full width in December still matters in March, because there has to be somewhere to put whatever falls next. Storms cross the Taconic line and reach this valley carrying weight. The crew works out to the edges and leaves the place looking like a driveway again instead of a field.
