Spring is slow to reach the Outer Cape; the alewives are running the Herring River well before the lawns think about waking. TA Edwards & Sons start their year along Duck Creek and the streets above Uncle Tim's Bridge — raking out what winter left behind, cutting fresh bed edges, laying mulch, and getting the first mow down before Main Street fills up for the summer. From there it is mowing and trimming week in and week out, tidy lines under the hydrangeas and around every fence post. When the light goes low and the town empties for the year, the crew switches to plowing driveways, clearing walkways, and putting grit on the ice that sets up in the shade. Two seasons, one town, and a plain kind of pride in leaving a property looking cared for.
