A February storm reaches Wellfleet sideways, straight off open water, and by three in the morning Route 6 is one long ribbon of blowing white. RW Townsend and sons run plow routes through exactly that, from the marsh roads out by Blackfish Creek to the driveways tucked back in the pines. The aim is plain and it matters: a clear drive, a clear walk, and a passable way out before the sun comes up over the Atlantic. Cape snow is wet and heavy, and it packs hardest at the apron where the town plow throws it, so the trucks come back for a second pass and put sand and salt at the foot of the sloped drives. The reward is the look of an opened driveway at first light — dark pavement in the middle of a white town.
