Wakefield arranges itself around water — Quannapowitt on the north end with its walkers and sailboats, Crystal Lake tucked in on the other side of the tracks. A.M.H. Improvement, LLC keeps the lawns between them mowed and edged, trimmed along fences and walks, and cleared out in spring and again under the fall maples. In-town lots are small and fully on display, so the finish matters: a straight line, a clean border, nothing left on the sidewalk. Winter brings the plow and the shovel, driveways cleared and walkways salted while the lake is still black and the streetlights are on. Doing it before the town wakes up is most of the pleasure.
