Out toward West Hill the meadows go flat and open, and when the wind swings northwest the snow crosses them sideways. J&D Revell and Sons plows in exactly that weather — the storms that fill a driveway back in twice before dawn, the freeze that follows and glazes everything by morning. The work is straightforward and hard: push the snow, shovel the tight corners a blade cannot reach, put down sand or salt so the ice has nothing to grip. Between stops there is a quiet in the truck cab that is hard to describe — heater ticking, wipers going, a long white road ahead and the next house waiting at the end of it. By daylight the routes through town are open and the day can start on time.
