Along the canal towpath at River Bend Farm the mist lifts off the water an hour after sunrise, and by then Dan's landscape has usually made its first cut of the day. Summer work in the valley is mowing, trimming, and the tidy sweep of clippings off a walk; October is leaves, hauled away before the rain mats them into the grass. Then the light shortens, the plows go on, and the same driveways along the river road get opened while the fields are still blue-dark. A yard tended all year has a look to it — even lines, no ragged corners, nothing left where it does not belong. That look is the entire point of the work.
