Three in the morning in North Uxbridge, the Mumford River running black under its ice and the old mill windows holding nothing but dark — that is the hour Caguana Construction Inc. is already awake. Plowing here is a matter of listening: to the storm's direction, to the way wet snow packs differently than dry, to which lanes off Route 122 drift shut first. Every pass aims at one small triumph, a driveway a neighbor steps into at seven without breaking stride. Snow gets pushed to where it will not be in the way come the next storm, and entries get treated so the ice never takes hold. By sunrise the route is behind them and the town goes to work as if winter had skipped a night.
