Taunton lights the Green each December and the glow still hangs over the side streets long after the crowds have gone home — which is about when JRC Snow & Ice Removal starts the night's route. Plowing, shoveling, salting and sanding, from the first flurry of the year through the March thaw-and-freeze that turns every low spot on a walkway to glass by four in the morning. Ice is the quieter half of the work and the half that matters most. There is real pride in a lot that lies flat, dark and dull while the ones on either side are still shining. The city wakes up, and the storm is nobody's problem.
