By late June the grass along the ballfields at Hopewell Park has that dense, humid green Taunton does so well, and the smell of it carries three streets over. Ed's Lawn Service works those weeks the way they ought to be worked — mowing on a schedule, trimming the fence lines, edging the walks, and clearing the clippings so a yard looks finished rather than merely cut. Come October the same route turns to leaf work and fall cleanups, and the maples on the older streets let go of everything at once, as they do. There is a plain pleasure in stepping back from a lawn that is sharp at every border. It lasts about a week. Then you do it again.
