Spring reaches the hemlock ledges at Purgatory Chasm about a week after it reaches the open yards below, and that week is when Sutton wakes up all at once. Central Massachusetts Garden Services meets it with the spring cleanup — winter litter off the turf, bed edges re-cut, and a first mow that starts a season running well into November. After that it is mowing, edging and trimming on rotation, with leaf cleanup once the oaks finally let go. Half the lawns in this corner of the Blackstone Valley sit on a slope, and a clean cut on a pitch is a matter of patience rather than horsepower. Sutton and its neighbors stay on the route all season.
