Work Call

About Work Call

Autumn moves fast in Stoughton. One week the oaks are still turning above Pequit Brook, the next the yards are ankle-deep and the first hard frost is on the windshields. Work Call takes the whole arc of it — mowing and edging while the grass still grows, then the leaf cleanups, then the plow blade and the shovel when the first storm comes up from the south. Every job is the same shape: the phone rings, somebody needs a lawn cut or a driveway opened, and the truck goes out. What lasts is small and plain — a clean edge in September, a cleared drive at six in the morning in January, a Stoughton street that gets on with its day.
