October in Southampton is orchard weather: hayfields cut low, the Manhan running clear and cold, Pomeroy Mountain going rust and gold above College Highway. The warm months are mowing, trimming and grounds upkeep across open lots and shaded ones alike, with cleanups whenever the ground needs opening up or clearing off. By late November the plow gear goes on and the work moves to back-road driveways out toward Tighe-Carmody, where a single rural mile can drift shut between passes; walkways get cleared and treated so ice never gets a start. Then the frost lets go, the fields green over, and it all turns again. Out here, knowing which stretch of road catches the wind is worth as much as any machine.
