Ball Square wakes up early — bakery light, the Community Path already moving, and somewhere down the block a mower clearing its throat. Andre Landscaping works the small front lawns of Somerville, the ones measured in strides rather than acres, mowing them clean and edging tight against brick-set walks. There is a real pleasure in a strip of grass eight feet wide that looks like someone drew it with a straightedge. Summer here is short and crowded, so the work fits itself around parked cars and one-car driveways, and the sidewalk gets swept before anyone leaves. By October the side-street maples let go all at once, and the rakes and cleanup tarps come back out.
