Sheffield lies in the broad bottom of the Housatonic valley, where the hayfields run right down to the river and the mountains stand up west of town like a wall against the afternoon. Cold air pools here overnight, so a summer morning starts with mist across the flats and grass so heavy with wet that you wait an hour before the first cut. Wilson's Lawn Care works with that clock — mowing, trimming, edging the walks, cleaning the beds — through a season that begins late in this valley and ends early. The soil over the old marble ledge grows a thick, deep-colored turf when it is cut on a rhythm rather than whenever somebody remembers. Come October the whole valley turns and the leaf work begins, and by the time the fields go tan the lawns are put away clean.
