Come June, Seekonk smells like cut grass and warm asphalt, and the corn is already knee-high behind the farm stands out along Route 44. Tavares Landscaping spends those long afternoons in it, running lines across yards that lie wide and flat the way land does on this side of the Ten Mile River. The work is mowing, trimming, hedges brought back to a shape, beds cleared of whatever spring pushed up overnight. By evening the yards look combed, and the smell hangs in the air until dark, when the town goes quiet except for the far-off noise of a Saturday at the Speedway. Autumn turns the same route into leaf work, truckload after truckload, until the lawns come back bare and tidy for winter.
