On Chestnut Street the brick sidewalks heave a little each winter and the old trees throw a great deal of shade, which makes for lawns that need patience and walkways that need honest shoveling. Flannery's Handymen takes both halves of the year in Salem's older streets: mowing, trimming, edging, mulch and seasonal cleanups from April through leaf-fall, then plowing, shoveling and salting the same driveways and front paths once the temperature drops. A Federal-era doorstep swept bare while the snow is still coming down has its own small dignity. In July the reward is a different one — cut grass under tall shade and a strip of lawn edged so cleanly the brick looks new. Same houses, same hands, two entirely different mornings.
