In late May, when the oaks finally close their canopy over the older streets off Reading's common and the ground north of Boston has warmed enough to work, DVM Services is already down in the beds, setting perennials and seasonal color into soil that will carry them clear through to frost. This is a landscape and design outfit that thinks in whole yards: the excavator reshaping a slope, hardscape stone bedded and leveled by hand until a walk or a wall sits like it simply grew there, the mowed edge left crisp against the new plantings. Along these tree-lined streets, near the quiet ground where the Ipswich River first begins to gather, the labor reads as a patient shaping of place. Come the long green of July, a bed they set holds its bloom and a lawn they tend holds its line, an outdoor room made to sit easy in its season.
