Every April the herring shoulder their way up Town Brook, and within a week the slopes of Brewster Gardens turn a green so new it looks wet. That is the signal R & J landscaping waits for. Mowers come out, blades sharpened, and the season begins in earnest: weekly cutting, clean edges cut along walks and drives, beds turned and mulched, the winter's litter of oak leaves and pine straw hauled off. There is real pleasure in the last pass of an afternoon — the lines laid straight, the trimmer line quiet, the smell of cut grass hanging over a yard near the water. Plymouth lawns run from sandy to shady to soaked, and the work is learning what each one wants.
