Storms tend to announce themselves over Pontoosuc Lake first: the far shore goes soft, the streetlamps grow halos, and Pittsfield settles in for the night. Bartlett's Landscape Design is out in exactly that weather, pushing back drifts and squaring off driveway aprons while the neighborhood sleeps. The work is snow removal, plainly stated -- plowing, clearing steps and walkways by hand, and putting salt where the afternoon's melt will refreeze by morning. A driveway opened at two in the morning has a kind of grace to it: edges true, pavement dark and dry. The lake will freeze over and open again, and the job in between is simply keeping people moving.
