Pembroke's snow tends to arrive wet and heavy, hauled up off the bay a few miles east and dropped thick on the pitch pines around Furnace Pond. D&D Mulch and Landscape works the storms: plowing driveways and lots, clearing walkways down to the pavement, and treating the ice that follows a thaw. Storms here run overnight more often than not, so the work is a headlight-and-radio business, one property at a time until the town wakes up to something passable. There is a particular quiet at four in the morning on Center Street, plows out and nobody else moving. By breakfast the cars are backing out like nothing ever happened, which is the whole point of the night.
