October at Brooksby Farm smells like cider and cold rain, and by four o'clock the light runs low across the orchard rows. OutdoorX is out in it — the last cuts of the year, leaves cleared off the turf, borders put to rest before the ground hardens for good. Then the first flurries push in over Peabody from the northeast and the trucks change over: plowing driveways, clearing walks, salting the shaded stretch where a car door always freezes shut. In spring the mowers come back out, week by week, until the grass along the West Peabody side roads is even and dark again. There is real satisfaction in handing a yard back looking better than the weather intended.
