In late May, Moore State Park fills with pinkster bloom and the old mill dam on Eames Brook runs loud enough to hear from the road — Paxton at its finest. Orloff Tree Service & Excavation works the hill roads around it, on ground high and stony enough that trees grow slowly and hold on hard. The work is removal when a hemlock has gone gray and brittle, trimming to lift a canopy off a barn roof, and pruning that leaves a maple with a frame it can carry through an ice load. Winter reaches this ridge before it reaches the valley below, and when it comes down heavy the storm cleanup runs long — brush out, limbs cleared, drives opened one after another. The finish is what the whole day is for: a clean cut, a swept yard, and a view back down the valley.
