September is when Nauset Beach hands the town back to itself — the crowds thin, the outer bar goes silver, and the wind off the Atlantic carries straight over the dunes into every yard behind them. Nauset Gardens keeps those properties in order through it: mowing, trimming, cleanups, beds tended against a salt wind that tests everything planted near it. Grass that survives out here has been coaxed, and it shows in the even color of a lawn cut low and true in autumn light. There is craft in knowing what the ocean will allow and then making it look effortless. Come October the leaves and stalks come out, the ground gets put to bed, and the place waits, tidy, for spring.
