Northborough sits on hills the Assabet cut long ago, and hills are the whole story once the snow starts. DJ's Plowing & Sanding runs the grades where a plow has to push uphill and a car has to stop halfway down: driveways off the ridge roads near Mount Pisgah, flat lots by the shopping blocks, walks that ice over in the shade all afternoon. The plow opens the ground and the sand makes it usable — that second part is the difference between a driveway you can see and one you can actually leave. Storms out this way often start as snow and finish as something meaner, so the work comes in rounds, back again when the wind fills a drive in behind you. Morning arrives, the pavement is dark and gritted, and the day proceeds as if nothing happened overnight.
