Northampton Mower Man

About Northampton Mower Man

Saturday morning on the Damon Road flats, the rail trail is already busy and the fields toward Hadley are the flat, bright green that only valley bottom-land gets. Northampton Mower Man is out while the dew burns off, because wet grass tears and dry grass takes that even, striped finish. The rounds are plain and repeating: mow, trim, edge, blow the clippings off the pavement, haul out the leaves once October gets serious. The opening cleanup comes first, when the frost heaves settle and the winter grit can finally come off the lawn. It is a lawn, cut on time, every time — which is most of what a lawn actually wants.
