In Leeds the Mill River comes down out of the hills in a hurry, and Roberts Meadow Brook runs cold under the road well into May. Spring here is a wet, stubborn thing: the ground gives late, the grass arrives all at once, and everything needs doing in the same three weeks. Through summer it is the weekly cut and a tight line along drives and walkways; through autumn it is leaves, and then more leaves.
